Overview
The Intel Xeon 678X is the 48-core tier of the Xeon 600 workstation family and one of the five SKUs Intel supplies as boxed retail units. It targets builds where the 64-core 696X is more CPU than the workload needs but the I/O requirement — eight PCIe 5.0 GPUs, 128 lanes, CXL 2.0 memory expansion — is identical.
Because the platform is shared across the line, a 678X workstation sees the same W890 chipset, the same 4 TB memory ceiling with MRDIMM support, and the same AMX instruction set with FP16, INT8 and BFLOAT16 acceleration as the flagship parts.
It is the common configuration for multi-GPU inference and fine-tuning nodes, where CPU cores mainly feed data to accelerators and the value of the higher-core SKUs is marginal relative to their cost.
Key Benefits
Identical platform to the flagship — same 128 lanes, CXL 2.0 and 4 TB memory ceiling. 48 P-cores is the practical sweet spot for GPU-fed data pipelines. Boxed retail for single-unit procurement. AMX FP16 keeps quantised inference on the CPU when it is cheaper there.
Applications
Multi-GPU inference and fine-tuning workstations; dataset preprocessing nodes feeding training clusters; engineering simulation where 48 cores covers the solver; mixed CPU/GPU rendering and VFX.
