Specifications

Product Family

Eaton PDI Static Transfer Switch (STS) and WaveStar TFA Static Transfer Switch

Current Ratings

WaveStar TFA: 250 A to 1,200 A. Eaton PDI STS: up to 2,000 A, 3-pole

Function

Automatic and manual transfer of a critical load between two independent AC sources

Transfer Mechanism

SCR / solid-state static switching — no moving parts in the primary transfer path

Synchronization

Volt-second synchronization for transfer within the source tolerance window

Controls

Dual redundant display and control — a single control failure does not block a transfer

Enclosure

Compact, modular enclosure; front-accessible service

Operating Temperature

0 to 40 degrees C

Altitude

Up to 5,000 ft above sea level without de-rating

Matching PDUs

Line-and-match architecture with Eaton PowerHub 2 and PowerPak 2 PDUs for a single visual and electrical family

Redundancy Role

Second-level redundancy downstream of dual UPS systems — protects against a UPS failure, not just a utility outage

Quality Process

Rigorous five-step quality process per Eaton PDI (formerly Power Distribution, Inc.)

Monitoring

Source and load status at the panel; dry contacts and network options for upstream BMS/DCIM

Maintenance

Manual bypass path allows source or controller service without dropping the critical bus

Certifications

Built and tested to UL standards for IT power distribution equipment (UL 891 / UL 1008 class)

Typical Load

AI and HPC white space fed from A/B UPS pairs; colocation critical buses; UPS output distribution

Overview

A static transfer switch is the second layer of redundancy in a data centre. The UPS protects the load from a utility outage; the STS protects the load from a UPS failure or a UPS maintenance window. It sits between two independent sources and moves the critical bus across in milliseconds when the preferred source drifts out of tolerance.

The Eaton PDI line covers both scales. The WaveStar TFA runs from 250 A to 1,200 A in a compact modular enclosure and is dimensioned to sit line-and-match with PowerHub 2 and PowerPak 2 PDUs, so a whole distribution row reads as one product family. The Eaton PDI STS extends to 2,000 A in a 3-pole configuration for larger critical buses.

Volt-second synchronization keeps the transfer inside the source tolerance window so downstream power supplies are not stressed, and the dual redundant display and control means losing one controller does not strand the switch in its current state. Altitude is rated to 5,000 ft without de-rating, which covers most tier-2 and tier-3 sites.

Key Benefits

Millisecond solid-state transfer with no mechanical contactor in the main path. Dual redundant controls so one failure cannot block a transfer. Volt-second synchronization protects downstream supplies. Line-and-match with PowerHub 2 / PowerPak 2 PDUs. Manual bypass for service without dropping the bus. 250 A to 2,000 A across the PDI family.

Applications

AI/HPC white space on A/B UPS pairs; colocation critical buses; UPS output distribution and maintenance bypass; data centre second-level redundancy; laboratory and fab critical power.
