Overview
Busway has replaced cable and conduit in AI data halls because it installs in hours rather than days and can be reconfigured in service. Eaton's two families cover the two architectural roles: Pow-R-Way III is the enclosed feeder busway that carries power from switchgear to the hall, rated to 5,000 A copper, while PowerWave 2 is the open-channel plug-in busway that runs above the racks and accepts tap-off units wherever a new cabinet appears.
For GPU deployments the decisive advantage is reconfigurability. When a hall adds a dozen high-density AI racks, tap-off units are bolted onto the existing run without de-energising it, and PowerWave 2's integrated Power Xpert meter provides revenue-grade branch circuit monitoring so the new load is visible immediately. Pow-R-Way III brings seismic-certified, aluminium-housed feeder construction for the upstream run.
Key Benefits
In-service tap-offs let AI halls grow rack by rack without a planned outage. Revenue-grade branch metering in PowerWave 2 gives operators per-circuit power visibility. Aluminium housing and seismic certification reduce structural load and satisfy high-risk-region codes, and bolt-together factory sections cut installed labour versus conduit.
Applications
Overhead distribution in AI and GPU data halls, hyperscale and colocation risers and feeder runs, retrofit of existing halls with new high-density racks, and any facility that must add power capacity without shutting down live compute.
