Overview

Stereolabs' ZED X family splits one stereo sensor architecture across three physical baselines so that depth range follows mechanical fit rather than the other way around. The full ZED X carries a 120 mm baseline and reaches 0.15 m to 12 m, and up to 20 m in its extended mode — long-range perception for AMRs, vehicles and site surveying. The ZED X Mini halves that to a 50 mm baseline in a 94 mm housing with 0.3-20 m coverage, which is the general-purpose robot camera. The ZED X Nano compresses to an 18 mm baseline and 42 mm body for wrist and end-effector mounting with a 5-150 cm sweet spot.

All three share GMSL2 over FAKRA-Z coax with power over coax, hardware synchronisation and external triggering, and they connect to NVIDIA Jetson Orin and Xavier hosts through a ZED Link Capture Card Duo rather than a USB or Gigabit Ethernet port. That matters for robotics: coax carries power and data over a single thin cable up to 15 m, tolerates vibration and EMI far better than USB, and lets several cameras be triggered in lockstep for wide-baseline or surround rigs.

The software layer is where the family earns its keep. The ZED SDK provides depth, tracking and spatial mapping over CUDA, and Stereolabs maintains first-class ROS and ROS 2 wrappers, native Isaac ROS integration and matched camera models for Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab. A team can therefore capture data on hardware, train in simulation with a camera model that matches the real sensor's intrinsics and noise, and deploy back to the same camera — the sim-to-real loop that modern Physical AI pipelines depend on. ZED Box Mini provides a compact Orin-based host with GMSL2 support for deployments that need the whole stack in one enclosure.

Key Benefits

Pick a baseline, not a compromise — 120 mm, 50 mm and 18 mm variants cover long-range survey, general robot perception and wrist-mount manipulation. GMSL2 robustness with power over coax, 15 m runs and vibration tolerance instead of USB. Single software stack across the whole family via the ZED SDK. Sim-to-real ready with native Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab camera models and ROS / ROS 2 support. Multi-camera synchronisation for surround and wide-baseline rigs. Open, extensible integration spanning Unity, Unreal, OpenCV, PyTorch, Docker and MATLAB. Turnkey host option with the ZED Box Mini.

Applications

Autonomous mobile robots and AGVs for navigation and obstacle detection. Humanoid and robotic-arm manipulation at end effectors. Construction, agriculture and off-road autonomy. Intelligent transportation and vehicle perception. Volumetric capture and spatial mapping. Physical AI data collection and imitation learning pipelines. Warehouse automation and inventory robotics.
