Overview

The Orbbec Physis 257g is a passive RGB stereo camera built around a single idea: give a robot depth perception that matches how a human sees. Its 63 mm stereo baseline is deliberately close to human interpupillary distance, and the H120 x V90 degree low-distortion field of view covers the arc a walking humanoid actually needs to reason about. Because it uses passive imaging rather than a projected infrared pattern, there is no emitter to interfere with other sensors or to fail in the environments - outdoor sunlight, polished floors - where structured light struggles.

Both eyes run global-shutter 1920 x 1200 colour sensors at 60 fps with an on-board ISP that keeps colour and texture consistent across the stereo pair, which is what makes correspondence matching stable enough for metric depth. Orbbec rates typical depth accuracy at 1.6% at 2 m across a 0.1 m to beyond-10 m range. An integrated IMU supports visual localisation, and the GMSL2 interface carries video plus synchronisation over a single automotive-grade link.

The 157g monocular variant shares the same imaging specifications, hardware architecture, synchronisation framework and software design, in a more compact body. In multi-camera rigs the two are mixed freely to widen coverage on a shared time base - Orbbec reports hardware-level multi-camera sync error below 1 ms and factory calibration error below 0.3 pixels. With IP67 sealing and a -30 to 65 degrees C range, the series is specified for humanoid robots, collaborative robot arms and other embodied AI applications that must run continuously rather than in a lab.

Key Benefits

63 mm human-IPD baseline produces depth cues scaled to human environments rather than to industrial working distances. Passive stereo with no emitter avoids IR interference and works in sunlight and on reflective floors. Dual global-shutter 1920x1200 at 60 fps with on-board ISP gives stable stereo correspondence for metric depth. IP67, -30 to 65 C and shock ratings suit running, jumping and outdoor robot platforms.

Applications

Humanoid robot perception, collaborative robot arms, mobile robot navigation and obstacle traversal, embodied AI data collection, agricultural and outdoor autonomy, and multi-camera rigs needing sub-millisecond synchronisation.
