Overview

The Basler ace 2 GMSL is an industrial area scan camera with a GMSL2 embedded interface, designed so that a Jetson Orin system can receive raw sensor data over a single thin coaxial cable. Each camera carries its own onboard processing that preserves GenICam functionality and sensor control, so the camera behaves like a standard machine vision device even though the physical link is automotive-grade coax rather than GigE or USB.

The practical advantages are cable length, latency and payload. GMSL2 reaches up to 15 m at 6 Gbit/s per camera while power is delivered over the same coax (PoC), which means a robot arm or vehicle can carry cameras without a local compute node and without separate power runs. Because synchronisation supports free-run, hardware trigger and software trigger, multi-camera rigs can be aligned precisely. Resolutions run to 24.4 MP with frame rates up to 190 fps, and the 29 x 29 mm housing is available with IP65/IP67 sealing for washdown and outdoor duty.

Integration on NVIDIA Jetson Orin is a three-part stack: a partner industrial PC with GMSL2 deserialisers, the Basler Camera Enablement Package for that specific IPC, and pylon Software for Linux. Basler publishes a validated interoperability matrix so the camera, cabling, adapter kit and host combination is known to work before deployment. For development, the GMSL Adapter Kit (order number 109905) converts up to four ace 2 GMSL cameras to MIPI CSI-2 on the Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit.

Key Benefits

One cable per camera — GMSL2 data and Power over Coax on a single FAKRA-Z coax run up to 15 m. Embedded-native with GenICam compatibility and sensor control performed inside the camera. Wide sensor choice from global shutter for motion to rolling shutter for resolution, up to 24.4 MP at 190 fps. Pre-validated Jetson Orin hosts from Advantech, Lanner and Neousys, so the deserialiser, enablement package and camera are known-good together. Industrial sealing with an optional IP65/IP67 29 x 29 mm housing. Deterministic multi-camera sync via free-run, hardware or software trigger. Long-term availability with pylon SDK continuity across the Basler portfolio.

Applications

Autonomous mobile robots and AGVs with many cameras on a single Jetson. Autonomous vehicles and teleoperation hubs. Vision-guided robotics on arms and end effectors. Intelligent transportation, tolling and traffic monitoring. Industrial inspection where the camera sits metres away from the compute enclosure. Outdoor and washdown deployments needing IP65/IP67 sealing. Multi-camera 360° perception with hardware synchronisation.
