Use Case
Real-time AI inspection synchronised to high-speed production lines
Overview
The Cognex In-Sight 6900 Vision Controller is a modular industrial vision controller that replaces a fixed-configuration smart camera with a configurable system: cameras, optics and lighting are chosen to suit the inspection rather than the other way round. It launched on 28 April 2026.
At its core is an NVIDIA Jetson module. Cognex describes the shift as turning the controller from a traditional image processor into an AI engine that executes neural networks directly at the edge, with up to 157 TOPS so multiple high-resolution models can run simultaneously. TensorRT integration keeps inference decisions synchronised with the microsecond-level timing of high-speed production lines.
Connectivity targets factory networks directly: two 5Gb Ethernet ports acquire images, one 1Gb port handles data and configuration, and a further 1Gb port carries industrial Ethernet, with EtherCAT support and four high-speed plus four low-speed discrete outputs for reject and trigger handling. The die-cast aluminium and zinc housing measures 570 g and is rated for 0-40 °C operation.
Key Benefits
157 TOPS of AI at the edge with no external PC. Modular camera / optics / lighting selection. 2x 5Gb Ethernet acquisition plus EtherCAT fieldbus. TensorRT-optimised real-time inference for high-speed lines.
Applications
Automated optical inspection, electronics assembly verification, packaging and label inspection, automotive component checking, high-throughput multi-camera stations, and retrofit of fixed-configuration smart-camera lines.
