Overview
The Silent-Aire Coolant Distribution Unit is Johnson Controls' scalable liquid-cooling platform, launched to carry data centers from air cooling to direct-to-chip liquid as rack densities climb past what air can remove. The platform spans in-row units from 500 kW to 1050 kW, with skid-mounted gallery configurations scaling beyond 10 MW.
Positioned either in-row adjacent to heat-generating equipment or in the whitespace perimeter, the CDU circulates coolant between chip-level capture devices and the facility's higher-level cooling. A published 1 MW sample specification rates 1050 kW of cooling using 25% propylene glycol at a 5.2 °C (9.4 °F) approach temperature.
Manufacturing is distributed across more than 1.8 million square feet of production floorspace in Asia Pacific, North America and Europe, and the platform is backed by the wider Johnson Controls thermal ecosystem including YORK chillers and M&M Carnot. Paired with a YORK YVAM chiller, Johnson Controls quotes an average global PUE of 1.2.
Key Benefits
One platform from 500 kW to 10 MW — size the CDU to the row today and grow without changing vendors. 5.2 °C approach temperature at 1050 kW with 25% propylene glycol delivers precise supply temperature. Flexible topology — in-row, whitespace perimeter or hybrid placement fits dense urban colocation. Component-level redundancy and smart multi-unit synchronization keep availability high. Global manufacturing capacity across three regions shortens lead time on large rollouts.
Applications
High-density AI training and inference halls, hyperscale and colocation builds in space-constrained urban markets, data centers retrofitting liquid cooling onto existing white space, and hybrid facilities pairing chip-level cold plates with row-level heat rejection.
