Overview
Single Pair Ethernet extends Ethernet to field devices over one twisted pair, and the Brechel BE-IIS-HPP-T1S and T1L boards are the cheapest way to put a Raspberry Pi on such a segment. They differ in the MAC-PHY they carry and the topology they support: the T1S board uses the Microchip LAN8651 for 10BASE-T1S multidrop operation with at least eight nodes sharing a bus up to 25 metres, while the T1L board uses the Analog Devices ADIN1110 for 10BASE-T1L long-reach point-to-point runs.
Isolation is handled differently on each board because the standards differ. The T1L design isolates through transformer coupling rated 2250 V DC for 60 seconds, which suits long cable runs between buildings or cabinets. The T1S design uses capacitive coupling with a minimum 5 mm clearance, appropriate for a short multidrop segment inside one machine or panel.
Both boards belong to the BE-IIS HAT++ ecosystem, which allows several industrial communication HATs to be stacked on one Raspberry Pi without SPI or GPIO resource conflicts. That matters when a prototype needs, for example, SPE plus another fieldbus simultaneously - a common situation when evaluating whether to migrate a legacy segment to Ethernet.
Key Benefits
10BASE-T1S multidrop or 10BASE-T1L long reach from the same family, galvanic isolation via transformer or capacitive coupling, stackable HAT++ ecosystem without SPI/GPIO conflicts, and HAT+ compliance across Pi 3, 4, 5 and Zero 2 W.
Applications
Industrial automation prototyping, building and HVAC control networks, process instrumentation segments, factory floor sensor buses, and engineering education labs evaluating Single Pair Ethernet migration.
