Overview
The Silicom Madrid is a ruggedized Intel Atom C3000 network appliance built for carrier and industrial edge locations where a rack server will not fit and where a fan-cooled platform is unacceptable. Its C3000 SoC integrates the packet processing, memory controller and Ethernet MACs on-die, and Silicom adds a Marvell plus Intel i350AM4 switching layer to reach up to eight Gigabit Ethernet ports in a mix of RJ45 copper, PoE+ capable copper and UTP/SFP combo ports.
Platform robustness is handled at the firmware level: Coreboot with dual-redundant SPI flash means a corrupted primary image cannot brick the unit, and the programmable reset and power buttons implement configurable short-tap and long-tap semantics for graceful versus hard shutdown in unmanned cabinets. Memory can be soldered down or supplied as SODIMM up to 32 GB with ECC, and storage spans soldered eMMC, M.2 SATA, 2.5 inch SATA and SATA DOM.
For wide-area connectivity Silicom offers both mini-PCIe and M.2 B-Key LTE slots with externally accessible SIM sockets, plus dual-band WiFi on the remaining mini-PCIe slots. A 5G IoT Gateway variant built on the same baseboard covers deployments that need cellular as the primary WAN rather than a failover option.
Key Benefits
Fanless C3000 efficiency: low-power Atom C3000 with on-die packet processing for always-on edge sites. Failure-resistant firmware: Coreboot with dual-redundant SPI flash and programmable power/reset buttons. Port density: up to 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports including PoE+ capable copper and SFP combo. Flexible WAN: mini-PCIe and M.2 LTE slots with front-accessible SIM plus dual-band WiFi.
Applications
Carrier and telco edge cabinets, industrial IoT data concentration, remote-site VPN and firewall appliances, utility and transportation cabinets, retail store networking with PoE peripherals, and cellular-primary 5G IoT gateways.
