Overview
The Silicon Motion SM8008 is the boot-drive member of the company's PCIe Gen5 enterprise controller line, shown at Computex 2026 next to the higher-profile SM8388 nearline controller. Where the SM8388 is engineered for capacity and throughput across 128 TB of QLC, the SM8008 is aimed at the much smaller volume that holds an operating system and its logs.
That distinction matters in AI and virtualisation racks. Best practice is to keep OS, hypervisor and telemetry traffic off the data SSDs so a flooded log partition cannot degrade the storage tier — which means every node needs its own boot device. A Gen5 boot controller keeps the boot path on the same generation as the rest of the platform without consuming a high-endurance, high-capacity drive slot.
Silicon Motion positions the SM8008 as part of the same platform family as the SM8388 (enterprise nearline) and the SM2524XT (client and edge), which lets a system builder qualify one vendor's firmware and tooling across boot, data and client storage.
Key Benefits
Dedicated boot volume keeps OS and log traffic off the high-value data tier. PCIe Gen5 class so the boot path matches the rest of a Gen5 server platform. Single-vendor platform with the SM8388 and SM2524XT for shared firmware and tooling. Right-sized — you buy boot capacity, not nearline capacity, for every node in the rack.
Applications
Boot volumes in GPU and AI training servers; hypervisor boot devices in virtualisation clusters; edge and industrial systems with separate OS media; appliance firmware volumes; boot drives in EDSFF-based servers; paired boot-plus-data builds inside one controller family.
