Overview

The Marvell Bravera SC5 is the industry's first PCIe 5.0 SSD controller family: MV-SS1331 with 8 NAND channels for mainstream E1.S and M.2-class drives, and MV-SS1333 with 16 NAND channels for the highest-density E1.S and E3.S designs. Both are built on the same silicon and firmware, so a single board design can be re-spec'd up or down the channel count without a re-qualification.

Performance is 14 GB/s sequential read and up to 2M random read IOPS at under 6 microseconds of controller latency — roughly double the PCIe 4.0 controller generation. The part supports 32 virtual functions and 16 physical functions, AES-256 encryption with a FIPS-compliant root of trust and multi-key revocation, and an on-controller Elastic SLA Enforcer that meters host quality of service so that a noisy neighbour workload cannot starve the rest of the tenant fleet.

What separates the SC5 from a generic NVMe controller is the multi-usage-model capability: the identical hardware can be configured for OCP NVMe, Software Enabled Flash, Zoned Namespace or Open Channel operation. For SSD vendors, that means one controller SKU covers cloud, hyperscale and OEM programmes, and a drive can be re-purposed between them through firmware. With 16 NAND channels in a 20 mm x 20 mm package, the MV-SS1333 is the part that made the first 16-channel E1.S drives physically possible.

Key Benefits

First PCIe 5.0 SSD controller to volume — a mature, shipping design rather than a sampling part. 14 GB/s and 2M IOPS doubles the previous controller generation. One silicon, four usage models (OCP, SEF, ZNS, Open Channel) cuts SKU management cost. 16 NAND channels in 20 × 20 mm enables 16-CH E1.S. Elastic SLA Enforcer protects tenant QoS without host CPU overhead. Dual-port NAND interface and FIPS root of trust suit enterprise and government programmes.

Applications

Cloud and hyperscale SSD design-in; enterprise E1.S / E3.S / U.2 drive programmes; zoned-storage and Open-Channel research platforms; multi-tenant cloud block storage with strict QoS isolation; FIPS-regulated and government storage builds; NVMe boot drives for PCIe 5.0 GPU servers; SSD evaluation and reference-design bring-up.
