Overview
AMD's EPYC 8005 Series, codenamed Sorano, replaces the EPYC 8004 "Siena" line as AMD's single-socket platform for edge, telco and storage. It moves the series to Zen 5 and expands the core range dramatically: from 8 to 84 cores inside a 70-225 W envelope, compared with 40 cores maximum previously.
The flagship EPYC 8635P carries 84 cores and 168 threads with a 1.6 GHz base clock, 3.45 GHz all-core boost, 4.5 GHz maximum boost and 384 MB of L3 cache. Its 225 W TDP can be configured down to 155 W for thermally or energy-constrained sites, and 1KU pricing is $5,799. Against the previous generation AMD claims 2.1x the cores, a 10 W lower maximum TDP and 91% higher integer performance — a substantial density gain without a power penalty.
Platform capabilities are shaped by the deployment environment rather than the data center: 6 channels of DDR5-6400 ECC memory, 96 PCIe Gen 5 lanes plus 8 PCIe Gen 3 lanes, single-socket SP5 packaging, wide thermal operating ranges and support for NEBS-compliant, rugged and outdoor platforms. Because EPYC 8005 is a drop-in upgrade for EPYC 8004 servers after a BIOS update, existing edge and vRAN installations can be refreshed without replacing the chassis — the key economic argument for telco operators running compute-intensive L1 processing at the tower.
Key Benefits
Up to 84 Zen 5 cores in a 225 W single socket — 2.1x the cores and 91% higher integer performance than EPYC 8004 at a lower maximum TDP. Edge- and telco-shaped platform with NEBS-ready support, wide thermal ranges and a configurable 155-225 W envelope, plus drop-in upgradeability for existing EPYC 8004 servers via BIOS update.
Applications
vRAN and 5G telco infrastructure including L1 processing, edge computing nodes, rugged and outdoor NEBS-compliant platforms, 5G tower deployments, cloud storage servers, and density-constrained single-socket compute where rack power and space are fixed.
