Overview
The SSG-229J-5BE36JBF is the E3.S member of Supermicro's Petascale JBOF line. Instead of an x86 storage head running the NVMe-oF target, the chassis carries BlueField-3 DPUs in two slide-in controller canisters, each of which can also host an NVIDIA GPU for inline filtering, compression or vector work.
That architecture removes the CPU, NIC, PCIe switch, memory and BMC that a conventional storage server needs, which is where the power and latency savings come from: the DPU saturates a 400 Gb/s fabric link and cuts 4 KB random-read latency by around 13% against an x86 JBOF. Use it where GPUs are starved of training data rather than of compute.
