Overview

ABB's contribution to 800 VDC rests on a decade of low-voltage DC experience in the marine sector, where LVDC systems have run at 1000 VDC and up to 20 MW since 2013 and have reported 20-40% energy savings with up to 30% lower maintenance costs. That operating history is the argument ABB makes for carrying LVDC into AI data centers, rather than inventing the protection and distribution layer from scratch.

The product portfolio spans power conversion, electromechanical and solid-state breakers, power distribution and uninterruptible power supplies. The Infinitus solid-state breaker is the notable new element - at 800 VDC the protection and arc-flash problem is genuinely new, and solid-state interruption is the path to a serviceable, DC-listed stack that a multi-vendor AI hall can be certified against.

ABB is developing the architecture alongside NVIDIA, Hitachi Energy and Schneider Electric, with deliverables including a Q1 2026 LVDC white paper addressing protection coordination, backward compatibility, safety and interoperability. The target is a medium-voltage UPS feeding 800 VDC distribution into the server room for 1 MW-class racks and gigawatt-scale campuses - a transition that reduces conductor size and copper and aluminium usage at the same time as it removes conversion stages.

Key Benefits

Field-proven LVDC: a decade of marine DC distribution at 20 MW de-risks the AI data center transition. Solid-state protection: Infinitus addresses the DC breaker and arc-flash gap that blocks 800 VDC certification. Standards engagement: an LVDC white paper and vendor collaboration targeting a qualified multi-vendor stack.

Applications

800 VDC AI factories, megawatt-class GPU racks, gigawatt-scale campus power architecture, medium-voltage UPS to DC server room distribution, DC protection and switchgear, LVDC retrofits in marine-derived architectures.
