Overview
The Sipeed T256s is a portable USB thermal camera built around a 256 x 192 long-wave infrared sensor with 14-bit output. Its distinguishing feature over a conventional thermal dongle is an on-board 2.4 TOPS neural processing unit that performs 2.5x AI super-resolution in hardware, producing a 640 x 480 output in real time rather than relying on host-side interpolation.
Radiometric performance is serious for the class: NETD below 50 mK at 25 °C, a -15 to 500 °C span with automatic switching between a high-accuracy mode covering -15 to 150 °C and a wide-range mode covering 50 to 500 °C, and accuracy of plus or minus 2 °C or 2 percent of reading. The 56 x 42 degree field of view suits board-level and enclosure-level inspection, and an optional detachable macro lens brings the working distance down to 5 cm for PCB work.
The camera presents as a standard UVC device, so it works with phones, tablets and PCs without drivers. It streams either MJPEG pseudo-colour imagery or 14-bit Y16 raw temperature data, which is the format needed if you want to do your own radiometric analysis. Male and female USB Type-C ports sit on opposite ends so the unit can plug straight into a phone or be daisy-chained, and a 1.69-inch 240 x 280 touchscreen supports standalone use with a three-spot (centre, hot, cold) readout and six colour palettes.
Key Benefits
Hardware AI super-resolution from 256 x 192 to 640 x 480 gives usable detail without host-side processing. NETD under 50 mK resolves small thermal differences for fault-finding. 14-bit Y16 raw output alongside MJPEG supports both visual inspection and quantitative analysis. Standard UVC with no driver works with phones, tablets and PCs, and the optional 5 cm macro lens extends it to PCB-level inspection.
Applications
Electronics and PCB thermal fault-finding, electrical panel and switchgear inspection, building envelope and HVAC surveys, mechanical bearing and motor diagnostics, science and education, first-line equipment maintenance.
