Overview
The Silicon Motion SM2320 is a single-chip controller for external portable SSDs. It integrates the USB 3.2 Gen2x2 host interface directly with the NAND controller, so a portable SSD built on it needs no separate USB-to-SATA or USB-to-NVMe bridge chip. That removes a component from the bill of materials and reduces both board size and power consumption.
Performance reaches up to 2,100 MB/s sequential read and 2,000 MB/s sequential write over the 20 Gb/s link, with four NAND channels supporting 8 CE each (32 CE total) across 3D TLC or QLC media and up to 4 TB of capacity. Security features include real-time full-drive AES 128/256 encryption, TCG Opal 2.0 compliance, hardware SHA-256 and a true random number generator, plus Fingerprint Secure support. NANDXtend ECC provides end-to-end data path protection.
