Overview
The M.2 form factor is the default storage slot on nearly every edge AI computer, and the difference between a consumer M.2 drive and an industrial one is not marketing. Viking Technology's M.2 industrial SSD line is specified for the conditions edge deployments actually see: a choice of SATA 6Gb/s or PCIe Gen3 NVMe, capacities to 4TB, and an industrial temperature grade running from -45°C to 85°C for designs mounted in unheated cabinets, vehicles or outdoor enclosures.
The line covers the common M.2 lengths — 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110, all at 22mm width — so it fits the slot the board already has rather than forcing a carrier change. Performance reaches 2,100 MB/s sequential read and 1,400 MB/s write with up to 430,000 sustained random IOPS, which is enough for boot and workload storage on an edge inference node.
Two endurance modes let the same hardware be specified against very different write loads. In SLC mode the drive is rated at 10 DWPD for logging and write-heavy cache roles; in cMLC mode it is rated at 1 to 3 DWPD, which suits general read-mostly system storage. Mechanical figures are 1000G shock, 2.16 gram vibration across the 5 to 700Hz band, operation to 80,000 ft, and FCC/CE/TUV compliance.
Specific part numbers in the NVMe tier include VPFNP5240G5IJWK5 at 240GB, VPFNP5480G5IJWK5 at 480GB, VPFNP5960G5IKWK5 at 960GB and VPFNP51T925ILWK5 at 1920GB on Phison PS5012-E12 controllers, with the PS5013-E13T covering 128GB through 2TB. The SATA tier runs Silicon Motion SM2259 controllers with part numbers such as VRFEM4240GEIJWK5, VRFEM4480GEIJWK5 and VRFEM4960GEILWK5. All use Kioxia BiCS 5 3D TLC NAND.
QS Compute supplies Viking M.2 industrial SSDs to project specification, including the industrial-temperature grades that standard distribution lists but rarely stocks.
Key Benefits
-45°C to 85°C industrial temperature option for sealed, vehicle and outdoor installations. Up to 4TB in a single M.2 module. SATA or NVMe on the same 22mm footprint so a design can migrate interfaces without a board change. Two endurance modes — 10 DWPD SLC for write-heavy roles, 1-3 DWPD cMLC for general storage.
Applications
Edge AI computers and vision systems · industrial PCs and panel PCs · vehicle and railway computing · outdoor and unheated-cabinet installations · boot and logging storage on embedded controllers · write-heavy cache or journal roles in SLC mode
