Overview

The MikroTik CRS804-4DDQ-hRM is a four-port 400GbE switch that delivers 1.6 Tbps of switching capacity for a list price of USD 1295 — around USD 0.70 per Gbps at typical street pricing. That cost ratio is the reason it shows up in real AI clusters rather than only in lab benches.

The four ports are QSFP56-DD, which matters for cable and optic selection. These are not QSFP112 ports of the kind on an NVIDIA GB300 Station, and they are not OSFP ports as used on Spectrum-X class switches or many ConnectX-8/9 cards — QSFP56-DD is the interface to buy optics for. Each 400G port can also break out to 2x 200GbE QSFP56 and finer, which gives a flexible path to 400G without a full fabric rebuild.

Two 10Gbase-T management ports connect to the management processor rather than the switch chip, and there is a serial console port for out-of-band access. The chassis is half-width at 218 mm but 387 mm deep, so depth rather than width is the mounting constraint. Power comes from two redundant 350 W Gospower supplies. In production use these have run the RDMA backend for an 8x NVIDIA GB10 cluster.

Key Benefits

1.6 Tbps for under USD 0.70 per Gbps — the lowest cost-per-gigabit path to 400G switching. Breakout flexibility — 4x 400G can split into 2x 200G per port and finer. Out-of-band management via separate 10Gbase-T management ports and a serial console. Redundant 350 W supplies in a half-width chassis. Field-proven running RDMA backends for GB10 and GB300 class clusters.

Applications

RDMA network backends for small GPU clusters; 400G lab and development fabrics; GB10 and GB300 Station cluster interconnection; cost-sensitive AI research networks; 400G storage network attach; multi-node test beds needing 400G without a chassis-class budget.
