Overview

The Intel X520-DA2 is the longest-serving 10GbE server adapter in the Intel line, built on the 82599ES controller. It predates PCIe 3.0, so it is a x8 PCIe 2.0 card — still ample for two 10G ports, and frequently the cheapest route to 10G in older platforms.

Driver availability is its strongest argument: the ixgbe driver is inbox on essentially every Linux distribution, Windows Server release and ESXi build, which makes the X520 the low-risk spare-part choice for fleets built between 2012 and 2020.

Key Benefits

Lowest-cost dual 10G with full SFP+ optics support. Universal driver support via ixgbe. FCoE and iSCSI offload included. Huge installed base — predictable spares and firmware.

Applications

Legacy server refresh, homelab and SMB 10G upgrades, network monitoring/tap ports, firewall builds where driver maturity outweighs raw speed, and spare-part stocking for X520 fleets.
