Overview
AI inference and edge servers often have storage-hungry workloads but only one or two free PCIe Gen5 x16 slots. HighPoint's Rocket adapters solve that with a Broadcom PEX89048 48-lane switch on the card: one x16 upstream link fans out to eight M.2 sockets or four MCIO 8i ports, supporting up to 32 U.2, U.3, E1.S or EDSFF drives and roughly two petabytes behind a single slot.
The line splits by intent. The Rocket 7600A family provides bootable NVMe RAID 0/1/10 with SafeStorage OPAL support, which keeps hypervisors and database hosts online after a boot-drive failure. The Rocket 1600A family is a pure Gen5 switch for software-defined storage — Ceph, ZFS, S2D — running on native in-box NVMe drivers with no RAID driver to maintain. Both share UBM and VPP backplane compliance, hot-swap support and out-of-band MCTP/SMC management.
Key Benefits
Up to 32 drives and 60 GB/s from one x16 slot delivers tier-one storage density in a 1U or edge chassis. Bootable RAID 1 protects host uptime without a separate backplane. Driverless switch modes reduce OS maintenance, and UBM/VPP compliance with hot-swap lets operators service drives without taking the AI node offline.
Applications
AI inference and edge servers with limited slots, software-defined storage nodes (Ceph, ZFS, S2D), workstation NVMe expansion, boot-drive redundancy for virtualisation hosts, and dense U.2/E3.S storage front-ends for training data.
