Overview
The Broadcom MegaRAID 9600 series is the third generation of tri-mode NVMe/SAS/SATA storage adapters built for servers whose primary storage is NVMe SSD. A single 9600 controller drives up to 240 SAS/SATA devices or 32 NVMe devices, letting one adapter serve a dense NVMe array, a large warm-tier SAS HDD pool and SATA boot devices at the same time.
Compared with the previous generation, the 9600 family delivers twice the bandwidth, over 4x the IOPS, a 25x reduction in write latency and up to 60x faster rebuilds. That rebuild figure matters most in production: a RAID 5 or RAID 6 group rebuilt 60x faster dramatically shortens the degraded window on a multi-terabyte NVMe array.
The 9670W-16i adds a thermal design that reaches those performance levels without increasing airflow requirements over the previous generation, so existing 2U and 4U GPU and storage platforms can adopt it without re-engineering the cooling path. Hardware Secure Boot and SPDM attestation support meet the verified-boot requirements of modern AI and cloud infrastructure.
Key Benefits
60x faster rebuilds, 2x bandwidth and 25x lower write latency versus the prior generation. Tri-mode ports collapse NVMe, SAS and SATA onto one controller, and the 9670W-16i keeps the same airflow envelope so it drops into existing server designs. CacheVault CVPM05 flash cache protection removes the battery from the RAID cache path.
Applications
AI training and inference storage tiers, NVMe SSD RAID arrays, large SAS HDD capacity pools, database and analytics servers, video and media storage, software-defined storage nodes, and any 2U/4U platform that must mix NVMe performance with high-capacity SAS drives.
