Overview

The 9600 series eHBAs are the pass-through members of Broadcom's third-generation tri-mode adapter family. They expose SAS, SATA and NVMe devices directly to the host instead of presenting RAID volumes, which is what software-defined storage stacks (Ceph, vSAN, ZFS, Lustre and object stores) want: the OS owns the data protection and the adapter delivers clean, low-overhead connectivity.

Five models cover the common port layouts: the 24-port 9600-24i and 16-port 9600-16i for internal drive bays, the 9600-8i8e for a mixed internal/external topology, and the 9600W-16e / 9600-16e for external JBOD shelves over x16 and x8 PCIe 4.0 respectively. All five are low-profile MD2 and consume 17–20 W typical, so several can coexist in a single storage node.

Because they share the 9600 platform with the MegaRAID 9600 RAID adapters, the eHBAs use the same driver stack, firmware generation and management tooling — one qualification effort covers both RAID and pass-through deployments in the same fleet.

Key Benefits

24G SAS tri-mode ports at 22.5/12/6 Gb/s with NVMe support on the same connector, up to 6.4M IOPS of JBOD throughput, and a shared driver/firmware stack with the MegaRAID 9600 family. Low-profile MD2 at 17–20 W keeps high port counts practical in dense storage nodes.

Applications

Software-defined storage nodes, Ceph and vSAN clusters, ZFS and Lustre storage servers, external JBOD shelves, boot-from-SAS configurations, and AI data-lake nodes that need maximum raw device throughput without RAID offload.
