QSFP-DD vs OSFP at 800G
Both form factors reach 800G over eight 100G lanes, so the choice is mechanical and thermal rather than electrical. OSFP is the higher-power envelope with a taller shell and more heatsink area, and is the default on 800G switch faces in AI back-end fabrics. QSFP-DD keeps the narrower QSFP family footprint and is preferred where existing 400G QSFP-DD panels and cable trays must be reused.
Astera Labs ships the same Taurus silicon in both shells (EM800-EPS for OSFP, EM800-QDX for QSFP-DD), which means a deployment can mix them behind a single management stack. That matters during a phased upgrade from 400G to 800G: clusters that keep QSFP-DD on one side and adopt OSFP on the new side still present one coherent telemetry surface for the fabric team.
