Why the smart cable module exists

Passive copper DAC reaches roughly 2-3 metres at 800G. Beyond that, signal integrity collapses and the usual answer is optical: AOC or pluggable optics with their own retiming, power draw and failure modes. The Taurus Smart Cable Module takes a third path — it puts a retimer inside the cable assembly itself so the link is regenerated in-line, extending copper reach while keeping the host ports unchanged.

The "smart" half is the management plane. Because a Taurus module participates in the COSMOS stack, the host sees per-module link state, bit-error-rate history and eye-diagram metrics rather than treating the cable as an opaque passive part. In a large AI rack where a single flaky 800G link can stall a collective operation, being able to distinguish a cable problem from a NIC or switch-port problem without swapping hardware is the practical difference the module buys.
