The 400G volume part

EM400-EPS is the highest-volume member of the Taurus family because 400G remains the workhorse tier of datacentre leaf-spine and storage fabrics. Dual 50G and 100G per-lane support means the same module covers both first-generation 400G ports (50G/lane over eight lanes) and later switch silicon that runs 400G as four 100G lanes — one part number to stock across a mixed-generation fabric.

The retiming inside the module is what distinguishes it from a passive QSFP-DD or OSFP DAC. Where a passive cable would need the host SerDes to close the link unaided, the Taurus module regenerates the signal, so reach and channel margin improve without changing the switch line card. This is the same mechanism used at 800G in the EM800-EPS, which is why the two are interchangeable from a provisioning standpoint.
