Overview

There is a class of platform where the storage bay is 1.8 inches and 5mm tall and simply cannot be changed: legacy telecom line cards, CompactPCI and VPX-style blades, and older embedded controllers still in long production. Spinning media for those bays is effectively gone, and a 2.5-inch SSD will not physically fit.

Viking Technology's 1.8-inch SATA SSD exists for exactly that case. It carries up to 1TB in a 5mm-high 1.8-inch envelope on a SATA 6Gb/s interface, at 520 MB/s sustained read and write with up to 100,000 sustained random IOPS and a 5+ year endurance figure. The 1920GB part number VRFS111T92EIKWK5 is listed in the family alongside 240GB, 480GB and 960GB capacities.

As with the rest of the Viking industrial line, the qualification envelope is the point: MIL-STD-810 testing, 1000G shock, 16.4g rms vibration over 10 to 2,000Hz, operation to 80,000 ft, 5% to 95% non-condensing humidity, and a -45°C to 85°C industrial temperature option. Data integrity is protected by 55-bit/512 BCH ECC per sector, end-to-end CRC, recovery from sector/page/block failure, and Power Fail Data Protection, with a bit error rate under 1 in 10^17 bits read. The controller is a Silicon Motion SM2259 with Kioxia BiCS 5 3D TLC NAND.

For a platform being kept in service rather than redesigned, that combination means a mechanical drop-in replacement for ageing 1.8-inch rotating media with no change to the host interface or mounting.

QS Compute sources Viking 1.8-inch industrial SSDs against project requirements.

Key Benefits

Fits the bay a 2.5-inch drive cannot — 1.8-inch, 5mm profile. Up to 1TB of solid-state storage for platforms still in long production. -45°C to 85°C industrial grade and MIL-STD-810 tested. Drop-in SATA replacement for ageing 1.8-inch rotating media with no host change.

Applications

Legacy telecom and CompactPCI line cards · VPX and rugged blade storage · older embedded controllers in long-lifecycle production · industrial equipment with fixed 1.8-inch bays · defence systems upgrading from rotating media
