Overview
The Toshiba MG11 Series is the volume capacity option for builders who need petabyte-scale AI storage at the lowest cost per terabyte rather than the absolute highest density. It delivers up to 24TB of CMR capacity from a ten-disk, helium-sealed 3.5-inch platform, using Toshiba's second-generation FC-MAMR recording technology to reach 2.4TB per disk.
Because the MG11 keeps conventional magnetic recording, it behaves exactly like the drives that came before it: no host-side changes, no shingled-write management layer, and predictable rebuild times in parity arrays. The 1 GiB buffer, 7200 RPM spindle, 2.5 million-hour MTTF and 550TB/year workload rating place it in the same 24x7 nearline class as the Seagate Exos and WD Ultrastar lines, which makes it a drop-in third source for procurement teams that deliberately multi-source their capacity tier.
Toshiba also provides Persistent Write Cache on 512e models, which protects data in flight when power is lost mid-write — a detail that matters in edge and remote sites where the UPS autonomy is short. SED and SIE options cover cryptographic erase obligations without a self-encrypting controller in the host.
AI storage architectures are tiered, and the MG11 is the tier that makes the economics work: training corpora, checkpoint history, dataset versioning, surveillance retention and regulatory archives all live on CMR nearline, while only the hot path is served from NVMe. QS Compute quotes MG11 alongside the NVMe tiers so a full storage pyramid can be sourced in a single RFQ.
Key Benefits
Up to 24TB CMR at 2.4TB per disk delivers cloud-scale density with full RAID and array compatibility. 10-disk helium sealing lowers drag and power per terabyte, cutting ongoing energy and cooling cost. 2.5M-hour MTTF with 550TB/year supports always-on 24x7 deployment. Persistent Write Cache protects in-flight writes on power loss. SED and SIE options deliver compliant crypto-erase. Dual SATA and SAS sourcing across six capacities lets a single SKU family fill every node in a rack, simplifying spares.
Applications
Cloud-scale and rack-scale storage systems; AI training-corpus and dataset archives; backup and disaster-recovery infrastructure; compliance and regulatory archives; data lifecycle management tiers; big data analytics clusters; video surveillance and NVR recording at scale.
