Overview
The Toshiba M12 Series is a family of 3.5-inch nearline hard disk drives that uses Shingled Magnetic Recording to reach 30 to 34 TB per drive. Toshiba combines SMR with its proprietary FC-MAMR write-assist technology and a helium-sealed enclosure, and the M12 is the first Toshiba nearline product to use a glass substrate, which increases mechanical durability while allowing a thinner disk stack.
Because SMR overlaps adjacent data tracks, random writes must be managed by the host rather than the drive. The M12 is therefore a host-managed SMR device: the storage stack owns data placement and rewrite scheduling, which keeps sequential throughput high while avoiding the performance cliffs seen when a conventional block layer drives an SMR device. The result is a 282 MiB/s sustained transfer rate with roughly 18% lower energy per terabyte than the previous generation.
Key Benefits
30-34 TB per drive cuts the chassis, power and port count needed for cold and warm data tiers. 550 TB/year workload rating and a 0.35% AFR fit continuous hyperscale duty. ~18% lower W/TB directly reduces facility power per petabyte. Host-managed SMR lets a modern filesystem or object store schedule rewrites instead of paying the random-write penalty.
Applications
Hyperscale object storage, AI training-corpus cold tiers, media archives, cloud backup and disaster-recovery pools, log and telemetry lakes, and any tier where sequential-write throughput matters more than random IOPS.
