Overview
The SanDisk DC SN861 U.2 1.6 TB SKU is the highest-endurance configuration of the SN861 family. Endurance is segmented by form factor — U.2 drives are rated 3 DWPD while E1.S and E3.S drives are rated 1 DWPD — so the U.2 variant is the one to specify where the write duty cycle is heavy.
1.6 TB is a relatively modest capacity, and that is the point: at fixed DWPD, lower capacity per drive means more endurance cycles absorbed by the same NAND, and it lets an array spread writes across many drives. The 1.6 TB U.2 part is therefore aimed at write-heavy enterprise workloads rather than capacity tiers.
Feature-wise it matches the rest of the family: PCIe Gen5 interface, AES-XTS 256-bit encryption, TCG OPAL 2.01 self-encryption support, end-to-end data protection, and average idle power below 5 W.
Key Benefits
3 DWPD in U.2 — the family's highest endurance tier. TCG OPAL 2.01 — self-encrypting drive support for compliance-driven deployments. Sub-5W idle — well-behaved thermal profile in dense arrays.
Applications
Write-heavy enterprise databases, AI inference node boot and cache volumes, mission-critical transaction logs, and any U.2 deployment where write endurance rather than capacity is the binding requirement.
