Overview
The KIOXIA CD7-R is the PCIe 5.0 read-intensive tier of the KIOXIA data center NVMe portfolio, positioned between the PCIe 4.0 CD6/CD8 generation and the newer CD8P/CD9P parts. It uses the same in-house KIOXIA controller and BiCS FLASH 3D TLC NAND generation as the CD8 family, which means field-compatible firmware behaviour and the same 2,500,000-hour MTTF reliability rating, but on a PCIe 5.0 host interface with roughly double the per-drive sequential read bandwidth of the PCIe 4.0 CD8-R.
KCD71RJE7T68, KCD71RJE3T84 and KCD71RJE1T92 are the base (standard security) E3.S 7.5 mm models at 7.68 TB, 3.84 TB and 1.92 TB. The SIE (Sanitize Instant Erase) counterparts carry the KCD7X prefix — KCD7XRJE7T68, KCD7XRJE3T84 and KCD7XRJE1T92 — and provide a hardware crypto-erase path for decommissioning without a full media overwrite.
The E3.S 7.5 mm short form factor is what makes the CD7-R interesting for AI and HPC front-end nodes: the 76 mm x 112.75 mm x 7.5 mm envelope doubles the drives per rack unit versus 15 mm U.2/U.3, and it is a drop-in for the E3.S backplanes that the current generation of PCIe 5.0 GPU servers ship with. Power Loss Protection and end-to-end data correction are standard on every capacity, so the drive can be used in write-cache-enabled hosts without a separate UPS-managed shutdown window.
Key Benefits
PCIe 5.0 bandwidth in a 7.5 mm E3.S envelope — up to 6,450 MB/s sequential read and 1,050K IOPS random read for hyperscale, OLTP and AI front-end workloads. PLP on every capacity protects in-flight writes during power loss. 2.5M-hour MTTF and 1 DWPD give a predictable 5-year service life on read-intensive profiles. SIE hardware erase shortens secure decommissioning to seconds. Limited firmware variance across the KCD71/KCD7X line keeps qualification effort low when adding a capacity tier.
Applications
Hyperscale and cloud scale-out storage nodes; AI/ML training data pipelines and feature stores; online transaction processing (OLTP) and relational databases; virtualized environments and VDI; streaming media and CDN origin servers; big-data analytics and IoT ingestion tiers; boot and caching layers in PCIe 5.0 GPU servers.
