Overview
The Toradex Zinnia is an industrial IoT gateway built on the company's Verdin system-on-module family, so the compute inside can be an NXP i.MX 8M Plus, an i.MX 8M Mini, an i.MX 95, or a Texas Instruments AM62/AM62P. Toradex positions it for edge AI and industrial automation, smart-city gateways and data-logging roles where a certified, long-lifecycle module matters more than raw clock speed.
The i.MX 8M Plus configuration pairs a quad-core Cortex-A53 application cluster with a Cortex-M7 real-time core and a 2.3 TOPS NPU, which is enough for local classification, anomaly detection and simple vision work without sending data off-site. 4 GB of LPDDR5 and 32 GB of eMMC carrying Torizon OS come preloaded, and the OS brings over-the-air updates and remote device management as standard.
Field connectivity is arranged around a single externally accessible I/O connector carrying I2C, RS-232, RS-485, CAN bus, three isolated digital I/Os and two 0-25 mA analog inputs, so sensors, drives and meters connect without a breakout board. Dual Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 with Bluetooth 5.3, and an mPCIe socket for optional 4G LTE or 5G cover the uplink side; a 9-36 V DC input with a lockable connector, DIN-rail mounting and a -40 to +85 °C rating cover the mechanical side.
Key Benefits
Swap-in SoM options (i.MX 8M Plus / 8M Mini / i.MX 95 / AM62) let one gateway design scale across performance tiers. 2.3 TOPS NPU with a Cortex-M7 real-time core supports local inference and hard real-time control on the same board. Isolated I/O, RS-485, CAN bus and 0-25 mA analog inputs are exposed externally with no breakout hardware. Torizon OS with OTA and fleet management is preinstalled, and -40 to +85 °C on 9-36 V DC with DIN-rail mounting fits cabinet and field installations.
Applications
Industrial automation and protocol conversion, edge AI inference at the plant edge, smart-city and utility monitoring, energy and building data logging, fleet-managed remote gateways, machine condition monitoring.
