Overview

The Digi IX40 is a 5G edge computing industrial router built for Industry 4.0 deployments, and the important word is computing. Rather than acting purely as a modem and firewall, the IX40 integrates processing power and memory into the same chassis, so industrial asset data can be processed, analysed and integrated on site before anything crosses the cellular link. That architecture suits predictive maintenance, asset monitoring and machine-learning inference at the machine, where round-trip latency to a cloud region is either too slow or too expensive to be viable.

Management is entirely cloud-native through Digi Remote Manager, included with the Digi 360 solution. DRM provides zero-touch provisioning, centralised configuration, and around-the-clock automated monitoring with alerts and performance reporting, plus secure out-of-band terminal access over serial and CLI — which is how a fleet of hundreds of routers across dispersed sites is actually operated.

Three optional services extend the platform. Digi Containers deploys containerised applications directly onto the router under the DRM licence, so custom analytics can run on the gateway without additional hardware. Digi WAN Bonding aggregates multiple links with seamless failover, which matters when a production line depends on continuous connectivity. DANI adds AI-driven network operations. A Digi eSIM accessory enables remote carrier switching and zero-touch activation without physical SIM handling.

Deployment targets span manufacturing process automation, utility and traffic infrastructure, energy and smart-city networks, oil and gas, and emergency response — with FirstNet Capable models available for public-safety use. QS Compute quotes the IX40 alongside the wider industrial gateway and edge-compute roster for buyers standardising an OT connectivity layer.

Key Benefits

Compute and 5G connectivity in one chassis removes a separate edge server from the cabinet. On-site analytics keeps OT data local, cutting both latency and backhaul cost. Digi Remote Manager with zero-touch provisioning makes large distributed fleets operable. Digi Containers lets custom analytics ship to the device with no extra hardware. WAN bonding and seamless failover protect continuous production connectivity. Out-of-band serial and CLI access keeps remote sites recoverable without a truck roll.

Applications

Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing connectivity; predictive maintenance and asset condition monitoring; machine-learning inference at the machine; advanced robotics and process automation; utilities, energy and smart-city infrastructure; traffic management; oil and gas field operations; FirstNet-capable emergency response deployments.
