Overview

The Semtech AirLink RX400 and EX400 are 5G RedCap routers aimed at industrial and commercial IoT deployments that need 5G-class latency and long-term network viability without the power draw, thermal envelope and cost of full 5G NR. Both are 5G Standalone, 3GPP Release 17 RedCap devices running at up to 226 Mbps downlink and 120 Mbps uplink, with 4G LTE Cat 4 fallback for coverage gaps.

RedCap is the practical answer to an awkward middle problem: full 5G modems are too power-hungry and too expensive for many off-grid or battery-adjacent sites, while 4G LTE networks have a limited remaining service life. RedCap keeps the 5G core and the 5G management model but strips the modem down to a fraction of the power — which is what makes these viable for remote telemetry, utility metering, smart manufacturing cells and distributed retail.

The two models split on physical hardening and I/O rather than radio capability. The RX400 carries a single GbE port plus single/dual RS-232 and a sealed IP64 aluminium housing rated −40 °C, with redundant power via both a 4-pin connector and USB-C. The EX400 trades the serial port and the IP64 seal for a second GbE port and a wider 9–30 V input in an IP30 metal case for cabinet-mounted installations. Both support optional dual-band Wi-Fi 6, dual-band GNSS and dual nano-SIM, and both run AirLink OS so containerised edge applications can be deployed alongside the routing stack.

Key Benefits

5G economics without 5G power. RedCap gives 5G Standalone latency and a 5G network roadmap at a fraction of the modem power budget. Two power paths on the RX400. 7–36 V DC plus a redundant 15 W USB-C input — useful where PoE or a UPS rail is available alongside the primary feed. Container-ready. AirLink OS exposes 600 MB RAM and 500 MB flash to containers, so a local data-reduction or protocol-conversion workload can run on the router. Industrial hardening. IP64 sealed aluminium on the RX400, −40 °C start-up, dual SIM and dual-band GNSS.

Applications

Remote utility and energy telemetry, smart manufacturing and factory-floor backhaul, distributed retail and kiosk connectivity, fleet and asset tracking, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, backup WAN for industrial control cabinets.
