Overview
DDR5 is usually specified by capacity and speed, but in embedded, telecom and defense platforms the constraint that actually decides the part is mechanical. A rack unit with half-height clearance cannot take a full RDIMM, and a conduction-cooled chassis has no room for a standard DIMM's length. Viking Technology's DDR5 line is organised around exactly that problem: the same DDR5 silicon spread across the full footprint ladder.
At the top of the ladder are full-height RDIMM modules up to 256GB and UDIMM modules up to 32GB. Below those come the low-profile families — VLP RDIMM and VLP UDIMM up to 32GB, and ULP RDIMM up to 32GB for the tightest vertical clearances. The MiniRDIMM and MiniUDIMM families trade some capacity for a shorter module, reaching 32GB. The smallest members are the VLP and ULP MiniDIMMs at up to 16GB, and the small-outline SORDIMM, SOUDIMM and VLP SORDIMM families at up to 32GB and 16GB respectively.
The practical benefit is a single memory generation that can be carried across a product family in several chassis depths without re-qualifying a different DRAM technology. A design that starts as a 1U server and later moves to a ruggedised enclosure can keep its memory vendor and generation while dropping to VLP or ULP modules.
QS Compute supplies Viking Technology DDR5 modules to order, including the non-standard footprints that distribution rarely stocks.
Key Benefits
One generation, every footprint — full height, VLP, ULP, Mini and small-outline DDR5 from one vendor. 256GB RDIMM at the top of the range for capacity-dense servers. Mechanically constrained systems addressed without reverting to DDR4. Single-supplier continuity across a product family's chassis revisions.
Applications
1U and dense rack servers · embedded and industrial PCs with height-limited DIMM slots · telecom and AdvancedTCA/MicroTCA line cards · ruggedised and conduction-cooled enclosures · edge AI platforms where memory must fit a sealed chassis
