Overview
The Vicor MCM4609 / MCD4609 ChiP-set powers high-performance GPU, CPU and ASIC (XPU) processors directly from 48 V. A single driver (MCD4609) plus a pair of MCM4609 current multiplier modules supply up to 650 A continuous and 1,200 A peak at sub-1V levels.
Because the current multipliers are only 45.7 x 8.6 x 3.2 mm they can be placed immediately adjacent to the processor — on the north and south sides — which reduces power distribution network (PDN) losses and raises overall system efficiency.
The ChiP-set builds on Vicor's Factorized Power Architecture, which separates DC-DC conversion into a regulation stage followed by voltage transformation through current multipliers. Bringing 48 V to the point of load keeps current, and therefore I²R loss, manageable.
The 4609 ChiP-set is part of Vicor's Power-on-Package portfolio of lateral power delivery solutions and the stepping stone to vertical power delivery, which pushes current density to 2 A/mm².
