Overview
The GU2 generation is the switching layer of the Vertiv Geist rack PDU range. Its defining feature is the outlet relay: GU2 uses bi-stable, magnetically latching relays that hold their position without continuous power. Conventional switched PDUs keep a relay coil energised for every outlet that is switched on, which is measurable standby load in a rack 40 PDUs deep.
Latching relays also fix a recovery problem. When a GU2 rPDU is switched off or loses input power, the relays open automatically; when power returns, the previously configured outlet sequencing runs in the defined order. Servers, switches and storage therefore come up in the correct sequence instead of all drawing inrush simultaneously — which matters when 8-way GPU servers with multi-kilowatt supplies share a feed.
The GU2 range spans basic, metered, monitored and switched families with unit, breaker and outlet-level metering, 120–415 V inputs, and 60 °C rated C13/C19 and U-Lock outlets. It is the rPDU most often paired with high-density AI racks because both the metering granularity and the sequencing behaviour are aimed at exactly that load profile.
Key Benefits
Bi-stable latching outlet relays remove continuous coil power and guarantee defined outlet sequencing after an outage. Metering is available at unit, breaker and outlet level, and the 415 V three-phase models carry up to 17.2 kW in a single rack PDU.
Applications
AI and HPC racks with multiple multi-kilowatt GPU servers, cabinets requiring per-outlet power accounting, remote power cycling of unstaffed edge sites, colocation tenants who need billing-grade circuit metering, and any deployment where correct power-up sequencing protects the upstream breaker.
