Overview
The SmartPod EXO is Submer's extreme-density single-phase immersion tank. A tank is filled with SmartCoolant — a synthetic dielectric with a 233 °C fire point, a −50 °C pour point and ready biodegradability — and the IT gear is immersed directly in it, so heat leaves the boards by conduction into the fluid rather than by air across a fin stack. That removes the fan wall, the CRAC units and most of the associated parasitic power.
Capacity is up to 361 kW of heat dissipation per pod, with 50 RU of standard 19-inch gear or 47 OU of OCP ORv3 gear. Built-in 2N pumps and 2N CDUs in the Twin Tank configuration give concurrent maintainability at a 5×9s availability target: each CDU can carry the full load while the other is serviced, and the dry zone keeps PDUs out of the fluid.
For operators this is the option that breaks the air-cooling ceiling on accelerator racks. A single pod replaces several air-cooled cabinets' worth of compute in one footprint, and the heat can be rejected to a dry cooler or recovered for reuse — Submer publishes PUE figures near 1.03 for immersed deployments paired with secondary cooling.
Key Benefits
Extreme density in one footprint — up to 361 kW in a single tank instead of spreading that load across an air-cooled room. Concurrent maintainability — 2N pumps and 2N CDUs mean service does not require shutdown. Water-free — dry-cooling and heat-reuse designs can remove direct water consumption entirely.
Applications
Hyperscale and colocation halls moving past air-cooling limits, AI/GPU training clusters, edge data centres in warm or water-constrained regions, and retrofit projects where a new hall must fit an existing power and water envelope.
