Why the 2.5-inch 3ME4 still wins in retrofits
The mSATA and 2.5-inch 3ME4 use the same controller and firmware, so the decision is purely mechanical. The 2.5-inch build wins wherever the drive replaces a spinning 2.5-inch disk in an existing chassis: the mounting points, connector position and 7 mm height are already correct, and no adapter or ribbon is needed. In a machine that is being refreshed rather than redesigned, that removes a mechanical change from the qualification scope entirely.
The wider body also gives more surface area for the built-in thermal sensor to work with, which matters in sealed fanless enclosures where the drive sits next to a passively cooled CPU. Innodisk rates the industrial-grade build at -40 degC to +85 degC, and the sensor feeds thermal-throttling decisions in the firmware rather than relying on the host to poll S.M.A.R.T. attributes.
