Overview
The ODROID-M1S Lite is a cost-reduced variant of Hardkernel's RK3566 single board computer, cutting onboard memory to 2GB LPDDR4 and eMMC to 32GB while keeping the full feature set of the standard board. It is aimed at industrial control, HMI and light edge AI designs where BOM cost matters more than memory headroom.
Despite the entry-level price the board retains the capabilities that make it useful in embedded products: Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0 at 4K60, 4-lane MIPI-DSI for direct panel attachment, USB 3.0, and an M.2 M-Key connector over PCIe 2.1 x1 for NVMe storage. The RK3566's RKNN NPU supplies 0.8 TOPS INT8 for duty-cycle inference such as presence detection, basic classification and edge analytics.
Power and thermal behaviour suit fanless enclosures. Hardkernel publishes roughly 1W idle headless and 1.5W in the Ubuntu desktop, rising to about 3.7W at peak boot and 3.2W under CPU stress. With the stock passive heatsink, the SoC stayed below 65C under sustained load at 25C ambient and below 75C inside an enclosure without throttling. The GPIO headers are unpopulated by default as a cost measure and can be fitted as an option.
Key Benefits
$60 entry point for an industrial RK3566 SBC; 2GB LPDDR4 with 32GB soldered eMMC; M.2 M-Key NVMe expansion over PCIe 2.1 x1; 4K60 HDMI plus 4-lane MIPI-DSI for direct panel connection; 0.8 TOPS RKNN NPU for light edge inference; sub-2W typical power draw with passive cooling and no throttling in enclosure; availability guaranteed to at least 2036.
Applications
Industrial HMI and panel computing, building and factory control nodes, digital signage players, light machine vision, IoT data collection gateways, fanless embedded controllers, education and prototyping.
