Overview
The Supermicro SYS-112D-36C-FN3P is a short-depth 1U server built on a 36-core Intel Xeon 6 SoC, the 6553P-B. At roughly 15.7 inches deep it is not trying to be a traditional deep 1U — it is designed for racks and cabinets where depth is a hard design constraint, which is where a lot of edge and telco deployments actually sit.
The networking is the headline difference from its 40-core sibling. Where the SYS-112D-40C-FN8P carries eight 25GbE ports, this model puts 2x QSFP28 100GbE in the same general front-I/O format. Two 100G uplinks instead of eight 25G ports is a different traffic profile — fewer, fatter pipes suited to aggregation rather than fan-out to many access links.
The chassis puts the primary I/O cluster and the PCIe expansion area on the front face, with redundant power supplies at the rear. Components are front-serviceable, so the server can be maintained from the aisle without pulling it from the rack. Management runs through an Intel i210 1GbE port with IPMI shared on LAN port 1, and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports sit on the front panel for local install and recovery work.
Key Benefits
Short depth — about 15.7 inches fits shallow racks and edge cabinets that reject standard deep 1U servers. 2x 100GbE QSFP28 for aggregation-class uplinks rather than many small ports. Front service access for I/O, expansion and maintenance from the aisle. 36 Xeon 6 SoC cores in a single-socket footprint with IPMI management.
Applications
Edge and telco racks with limited depth; CDN and cache nodes needing two fat uplinks; aggregation-tier servers in distributed sites; industrial and outdoor cabinets; front-serviceable deployments where rear access is unavailable; virtualised edge infrastructure.
