Overview
The iCE40 UltraPlus ICE40UP5K is built for a job that processors do badly: staying awake continuously on a fraction of a milliwatt. It carries 5,280 LUT4 logic cells, plus 1,024 Kb of specialised SPRAM in four 256 Kb blocks — unusually large on-chip storage for a device this small — and eight MAC16 DSP blocks.
Configuration is non-volatile, so the device is live the instant power is applied, and hardened I²C and SPI controllers mean common interfaces do not have to be built in fabric. That combination is what makes it the standard choice for always-on sensor hubs that wake a main processor only when something actually happens.
Key Benefits
Sub-100 µA standby and milliwatt-class active power — continuous operation inside a coin-cell budget. 1,024 Kb of SPRAM buffers sensor streams without external memory. Instant-on non-volatile configuration and hardened I²C/SPI remove external flash and fabric overhead.
Applications
Always-on sensor fusion and context detection, keyboard/embedded-controller and touch controllers, LED and display driving, audio pre-processing and voice wake-word front-ends, IR/gesture input, and battery-powered industrial sensors.
