The Samsung PM983a is the 128-layer TLC refresh of the PM983 data-centre NVMe drive, and the MZQLB7T6HALA-00W07 is the 7.68 TB U.2 build. It is a PCIe Gen3 x4 part, which sounds dated next to Gen5 silicon, but the majority of two-socket servers in service still expose only Gen3 NVMe lanes from their chipset or riser slots.
For those platforms the PM983a is the appropriate drive: it saturates a Gen3 x4 link (about 3,500 MB/s) at full capacity and carries a 1 DWPD five-year rating with 13.1 PBW published endurance. It is a routine choice for boot-plus-data pools in enterprise capacity refreshes where the server itself is not being replaced at the same time.
