Overview
The Samsung PM1653 is the current-generation 24 Gb/s SAS enterprise SSD, and the MZILG30THBLA-00A07 is the 30.72 TB U.2 build. SAS has not been displaced by NVMe in the tier that needs resilience above raw throughput: SAS drives are natively dual-ported, so a drive can be addressed by two controllers simultaneously, and a whole midplane of SAS can be wired redundantly without a PCIe switch fabric.
That is why very large SAS SSDs remain the standard building block for dual-controller arrays where the requirement is capacity plus availability rather than peak IOPS. At 30.72 TB per drive a 24-bay 2U enclosure presents roughly 737 TB raw in a footprint that still fits conventional SAS hot-swap carriers.
