Overview
The KIOXIA LD4 Series is KIOXIA's first solid-state drive in the E1.L (Enterprise & Datacenter Standard Form Factor, long) footprint. It brings high-capacity QLC flash to the EDSFF long form factor, which lets a single 1U server front-panel slot carry far more terabytes than a 2.5-inch drive tray allows. The design target is read-intensive hyperscale and scale-out storage, where capacity density per rack unit and per watt matters more than heavy write endurance.
The drive pairs KIOXIA BiCS FLASH generation 8 QLC memory with a PCIe 5.0 / NVMe 2.0e controller and carries a single-port design tuned for data center-class servers. It complies with the OCP Datacenter NVMe SSD Specification 2.6, the open standard that hyperscalers and OCP platforms use for fleet-level qualification. The LD4 begins at 15.36 TB and 30.72 TB capacity points today, on a validated architecture that KIOXIA states scales to 122.88 TB as higher-density QLC stacks come online.
For AI infrastructure buyers the LD4 addresses the read-heavy tier: training-data lakes, feature stores, model checkpoints and inference content caches that are read constantly but written rarely. QLC economics make very high capacity affordable, while E1.L mechanical density lets a single enclosure hold multiple petabytes without consuming the drive bays that GPUs and accelerators need.
Key Benefits
QLC capacity economics put high-density storage on the front panel of a 1U server. E1.L EDSFF density delivers far more TB per rack unit than legacy 2.5-inch bays. OCP 2.6 compliance aligns the drive with hyperscaler fleet qualification. PCIe 5.0 / NVMe 2.0e keeps latency low for AI data feeds.
Applications
Hyperscale and scale-out data center storage, AI training-data lakes and feature stores, analytics and in-memory database backing, content delivery caches, backup and archival tiers, and read-intensive storage nodes that feed GPU compute clusters.
