Overview

An Anybus Communicator solves a narrow but very common industrial problem: a machine or device already exists, it already speaks one fieldbus, and the plant wants it on a different one. Rather than replacing the device or writing gateway software, the communicator is wired between the two networks and the protocol translation is configured.

The current ABC3xxx generation is built on the Anybus NP40 network processor. HMS quotes up to 1,500 bytes transferred in each direction and up to ten times the throughput of the previous generation with lower latency, which matters where the gateway sits inside a control loop rather than in a data-collection path.

The form factor stays deliberately boring: DIN-rail mount, 12-30 V DC, a 12 mm-wide 4-pin power connector and an operating range of -25 C to +70 C. Configuration is over a dedicated Ethernet port with a web interface and the address printed on the casing, so commissioning does not depend on specialist software or cables.

Key Benefits

No change required on the existing device - the gateway does the translation, up to 1,500 bytes each way with low latency for time-critical loops, and IEC 62443-4-1 development with secure boot and signed firmware for OT security programmes.

Applications

Adding legacy machines to a modern plant network, connecting OEM equipment to a different PLC vendor's fieldbus, retrofit and brownfield automation projects, factory data collection, and industrial IoT edge connectivity where OT and IT networks must stay separated.
