Third-party testing has validated a range of AMD add-in GPUs in the PCIe slot, with caveats on the highest-power models
Overview
The HiFive Premier P550 is the board SiFive builds so that software developers can work with RISC-V Performance P550 cores in a machine that behaves like a normal Linux workstation. It is a Mini-ITX board with a standard ATX power connector, a PCIe Gen 3 x4 slot in an x16 mechanical connector, two Gigabit Ethernet ports and an HDMI 2.0 output.
Memory is 16 GB LPDDR5 in the base configuration, with 32 GB configurations generally available, and 128 GB of eMMC carries a preinstalled Ubuntu 24.04 image. That combination means the board boots into a usable desktop or server environment without any media preparation.
Two details make it more useful in a lab than a typical hobbyist board: a third RJ45 port wired to a dedicated management MCU for remote board management, and a USB Type-C debug path through an FT4232H bridge that exposes UART and JTAG. A 40-pin peripheral header with I2C, QSPI, UART and 16 GPIO covers custom peripherals.
Key Benefits
Real RISC-V hardware with desktop-class I/O - PCIe Gen 3 x4, dual Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI 2.0, 128 GB eMMC with Ubuntu 24.04 preinstalled for immediate software work, and dedicated remote board management plus UART/JTAG debug for lab and CI use.
Applications
Porting and benchmarking RISC-V software, kernel and driver development, compiler and toolchain validation, CI test runners for RISC-V targets, university and research teaching, and evaluating RISC-V for embedded products before committing to silicon.
