Overview

The M5Stack PaperMono and PaperMono-Lite are ESP32-S3 development platforms built around a 3.97-inch grayscale e-paper touchscreen with a frontlight. E-paper holds its image with no power, so the 1150 mAh battery supports long-lived status displays, asset tags and field instruments rather than the hours a backlit LCD would allow.

Both models share the core hardware: Wi-Fi, microSD storage, an IMU, a real-time clock, a microphone and a buzzer. The difference is radios — the full PaperMono adds LoRa and NFC, while the PaperMono-Lite drops them for a lower unit cost where only Wi-Fi is needed.

LoRa makes the full model a node in a long-range, low-power network, which suits remote metering, agricultural sensing and building monitoring where Wi-Fi does not reach. NFC makes the same device a tap-to-read label or a credential carrier, so a single SKU covers both telemetry and identification duty.

Because it is a standard ESP32-S3 target, existing ESP-IDF and Arduino code ports directly, and the microphone plus IMU enable simple on-device sensing such as tap, motion or level detection — using the microcontroller's vector extensions for lightweight classification rather than shipping data to a server.

Key Benefits

E-paper plus a 1150 mAh cell gives multi-week operation on a single charge · one hardware family covers Wi-Fi-only and LoRa + NFC deployments · ESP32-S3 is a proven, well-tooled target with broad library support · onboard IMU, RTC and microphone reduce external components in instrument designs.

Applications

Low-power status and signage displays, LoRa sensor nodes for agriculture and utilities, NFC asset tags and tap-to-identify labels, remote metering readouts, portable measurement instruments, and embedded Wi-Fi/BLE product prototyping.
