Overview

The Mecha Comet is a modular handheld Linux computer built around a magnetic 40-pin interface that adds a keyboard, gamepad, GPIO breakout or an AI accelerator as needed. It is aimed at engineers and field technicians who need a pocket Linux machine that can be reconfigured rather than replaced.

The i.MX 95 configuration pairs a hexa-core Arm Cortex-A55 cluster at 1.8 GHz with NXP's eIQ Neutron NPU rated at 8 TOPS, plus a Cortex-M7 core at 800 MHz for deterministic real-time tasks. That split lets the same device run Linux vision and inference workloads on the application cores while a microcontroller drives motors, sensors or timing-critical I/O.

Physical I/O is deliberately compact: a 3.92-inch 1080 × 1240 AMOLED panel, 8 MP IMX219 camera, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, optional LTE Cat 4 on the internal M.2 slot, and DisplayPort over USB-C for an external 2K60 monitor. The M.2 B-key slot takes 2242 or 3042 cards and accepts either a modem or, with a B-to-M adapter, a 2230 NVMe SSD.

For integration work the Comet is a portable test terminal: run the target Linux image, sniff CAN or UART through the breakout extension, and stream the camera for on-site vision checks. Mecha lists LoRa, FPGA and AI-accelerator modules as planned extensions.

Key Benefits

Magnetic modular extensions mean one handheld covers terminal, controller and instrument roles · the i.MX 95 pairing of Cortex-A55 + 8 TOPS NPU + Cortex-M7 enables vision inference and hard real-time control on one board · standard M.2 B-key expansion avoids vendor-locked accessories · fully local processing keeps field data on the device.

Applications

Field diagnostics and configuration of embedded controllers, portable machine-vision inspection, robot and drone ground station, Linux development and bring-up of i.MX 95 targets, and inventory or logistics terminals where a handheld with real I/O is required.
