Industrial Panel PC Buying Guide: 7 Specs That Actually Matter
Buying an industrial panel PC is not like buying a monitor. Pick the wrong IP rating and water from a washdown hose kills it in three days. Pick the wrong touch technology and your operators are stabbing a screen that won't respond through gloves. Pick the wrong CPU and your MES software crawls.
Here are the 7 specs that separate a panel PC that runs for 5 years from one that dies in 6 months — plus a supplier checklist you can send to vendors today.
1. IP Rating: Front Bezel vs Full Unit
This is the #1 mistake we see. A supplier advertises "IP65" — but only the front bezel is IP65. The rear chassis is IP40. Mount it on a food-processing enclosure where the back faces a washdown zone, and it's dead in a week.
| IP Code | Dust Protection | Water Protection | Where to Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP65 (front) | Dust-tight | Water jets | Factory floor, MES terminals, kiosks |
| IP65 (full) | Dust-tight | Water jets | Food processing, pharmaceutical, washdown |
| IP66 | Dust-tight | Powerful water jets | Outdoor, marine, heavy washdown |
| IP69K | Dust-tight | Steam jet cleaning | Dairy, meat processing, chemical plants |
⚠️ Always ask: "Is the full unit IP65 or just the front bezel?"
If the answer is "front bezel only," factor in an enclosure for the rear — or find a full-unit IP65 model. QS Compute's IPC-A310 and SDI-620C both offer IP65 front bezel with optional full-unit enclosure.
2. Touch Technology: The Glove Test
| Technology | Works With Gloves? | Works When Wet? | Durability | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Projected Capacitive (PCAP) | ❌ (needs special gloves) | Partial | Excellent | $$$ |
| Resistive | ✅ Any glove | ✅ Yes | Good | $ |
| Infrared (IR) | ✅ Any glove | ⚠️ False triggers | Excellent | $$ |
| SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) | ✅ Soft gloves | ❌ No | Excellent | $$$ |
Our recommendation for most factories: resistive touch. It's not as sleek as PCAP, but factory workers wear gloves. Resistive works with latex, leather, and fabric — every time.
3. CPU: Don't Overbuy
| Use Case | Recommended CPU | Why |
|---|---|---|
| MES terminal (data entry, dashboards) | N95 / i3-1215U | Low power, fanless, enough for web-based MES |
| SCADA monitoring, HMI | i5-14450Hx | Balance of performance and thermals |
| Vision inspection, AI inference | i7-13700H / i9 | Need the extra cores for real-time processing |
| Embedded, always-on, minimal UI | Celeron / Atom | For headless gateways, not panel PCs |
4. Mounting: VESA Is Not Enough
Standard VESA (75×75, 100×100) works for office monitors. For factory floors, you need:
- Panel mount — cut into an enclosure wall, front bezel flush. Most common in food/pharma.
- Arm mount — articulated arm attached to a machine or column. Needs VESA + reinforced bracket.
- Yoke mount — swivel stand. Good for operator stations that multiple people use.
Confirm mounting compatibility before ordering. Retrofitting a panel mount to fit a VESA-only unit costs more than the PC itself.
5. I/O: Count Your COM Ports
Industrial environments still run on serial — RS-232, RS-485, Modbus. A panel PC with 2×USB and 1×HDMI looks fine on a spec sheet until you realize you need 4 COM ports for PLCs, barcode scanners, and weigh scales.
Minimum for a factory MES station: 2× COM (RS-232/485), 2× LAN, 4× USB.
6. Operating Temperature: "0–40°C" Is Not Industrial
Office PCs are rated 0–40°C. A real industrial panel PC should handle -10~60°C minimum. For outdoor or furnace-adjacent installations, look for -20~70°C.
And if the spec sheet says "fanless," check the temperature rating. Passive cooling has limits — a fanless unit rated for 60°C is legit; one without a temperature rating is not.
7. Warranty & Lifecycle: 3 Years Minimum
Consumer PCs change every 12 months. Industrial PCs should be available for 3–5 years with the same SKU — otherwise you're re-validating your entire MES deployment every time a unit fails.
📋 Supplier RFQ Checklist
Send this to any panel PC supplier. If they can't answer all 7, keep looking.
- What is the IP rating of the full unit (not just the front bezel)?
- Does the touchscreen work with latex/nitrile gloves?
- What is the confirmed CPU model and TDP?
- Confirm mounting options: VESA, panel, arm, yoke?
- How many COM ports (RS-232, RS-485)? Dual LAN?
- What is the operating temperature range with passive cooling?
- How long will this exact SKU be available? (3yr minimum)
